A 60 by 30 inch alcove tub is the usual answer and drops straight into a standard shower opening. Where the space is tighter, a 54-inch tub or a deeper Japanese-style soaking tub with a smaller footprint can work instead.
Alcove tubs are the most economical and use the existing three walls. Drop-in tubs sit in a tiled deck and suit larger bathrooms with room for a surround. Freestanding tubs look the best and need the most floor space plus, usually, relocated plumbing.
